Dodge La Femme

Origin

The La Femme’s Raison D’tre stemmed from Chrysler’s marketing department’s observation that more and more women were taking interest in automobiles during the 1950s, and that women opinions on which color car to buy was becoming part of the decision making process for couples buying an automobile. The La Femme was an attempt to gain a foothold in the women’s automobile market.

The La Femme concept was based upon two Chrysler show cars from the 1954 season. Named Le Comte, and La Comtesse, each was built from a Chrysler Newport hardtop body, and each was given a clear plastic roof over the entire passenger compartment. While the Le Comte was designed using masculine colors, the La Comtesse was painted “Dusty Rose” and “Pigeon Grey” in order to convey femininity. Favorable responses encouraged Chrysler to pursue the La Comtesse concept.

1955

Dodge received the project and renamed the concept the La Femme, which began as a 1955 Dodge Custom Royal Lancer “spring special” hardtop two-door coupe, painted “Sapphire White” and “Heather Rose”. From there, the exterior received special gold-colored “La Femme” scripts that replaced the standard “Custom Royal Lancer” scripts on the cars front fenders.

The interior of the car also received attention and features. 1955 La Femme interiors were upholstered in a special tapestry material featuring pink rosebuds on a pale silver-pink background and pale pink vinyl trim. The La Femme also came with a keystone-shaped, pink calfskin purse that coordinated with the interior of the car. The purse could be stowed in a special compartment built into the back of the passenger seat, and its gold-plated medallion faced outward. This brushed-metal medallion was large enough to have the owner’s name engraved upon it.

Each purse was outfitted with a coordinated set of accessories inside, which included a face-powder compact, lipstick case, cigarette case, comb, cigarette lighter and change purse, all made of either faux-tortoiseshell plastic and gold-tone metal, or pink calfskin and gold-tone metal, and all were designed and made by vans, which was a maker of women’s fine garments and accessories in Chicago, Illinois.

On the back of the drivers seat was a compartment that contained a raincoat, rain bonnet and umbrella, all made from a vinyl patterned to match the rosebud interior fabric. Dodge marketing brochures for the La Femme stated clearly that the car was made “By Special Appointment to Her Majesty… the American Woman.”

1956

For 1956, the La Femme returned, with no less fanfare; letters to dealers from Dodge marketing department called the La Femme a “stunning success”. For 1956, Dodge replaced the Heather Rose and Sapphire White scheme with a Misty Orchid and Regal Orchid color scheme. The interior of the car in 1956 did not take its cue from the 1955 model, and instead featured “La Femme” only seat patterns, headliner, interior paint and carpet. The fabrics used have proven very difficult to reproduce. The seat coverings were made of a heavy white cloth with random, organic-seeming patterns of short lavender and purple loops, in a manner very similar to loop-pile carpeting. The headliner cloth was also heavy white fabric, with many, tiny random splashes of gold paint. The carpeting was loop pile with several shades of lavender and purple. The boxes behind the seats were also changed for 1956 to accommodate the rain coat, rain cap and umbrella that came with the model. Both boxes were identical this year, because there was no need for accommodation for a purse, which was only offered with the 1955 La Femme.

Legacy

Sales material for the 1956 Dodge La Femme

Dodge dropped the La Femme for 1957 and did not revisit the concept. Because the La Femme was a $143 option package, its total production was never broken out from Dodge’s production numbers, although research suggests less than 2500 were made over the two-year period. At least 40 known examples exist of the 1955 version and over 20 for the 1956 version, including at least 3 verifiable D-500 optioned 1956 La Femmes.

Many theories exist concerning the low sales of the LaFemme trim package. No evidence of magazine, television, radio or other LaFemme advertisements have ever been found since 1986. Given the large number of Dodge dealerships in the U.S. at the time, very few of them ever received a demonstration LaFemme for their showroom. Instead, single-sheet dealer pamphlets were the only clue that Dodge LaFemmes were available for purchase, in a time when other trim-special models such as the Chrysler 300 letter series, Plymouth Fury and DeSoto Adventurer were widely and enthusiastically promoted.

4 Remote Controlled Vehicles – Tips To Identify The Best One

There are many hobbies around the world but none more fun than the radio controlled hobbies that many people seem to enjoy. What could be more exciting than taking a fully efficient miniature vehicle version of a real car and driving or flying it? All it takes is a basic familiarity for motors and the radio equipment for you to join in.

1. Remote Control Cars –

Many men remember when they were young boys getting a remote controlled car to play with. Due to this, it is not surprising that this simple yet exciting toy is still the most fun. However, many may argue that this is no longer true.

These cars are created so the user can steer, speed up and slow down as they need it. Nowadays, this can be done in a couple of ways.

Some cars are designed to be battery operated; others are equipped with a gasoline or nitro methane engine. Why would someone change their car? Many notice that battery powered cars have less speed than gas or nitro fitted. These cars can come in kits that are already pre-done, meaning there are no special parts that can be added. (This is a good idea for someone new at remote control cars.) People can also build their remote control car from scratch meaning they will take parts from anywhere to make and design their car.

2. Remote Control Boats –

While a remote control car is very popular to have, for enthusiasts having a boat can be fun too. It is pretty easy to convert toy boat and make it into one that can be controlled by remote. The only issue to this is the boat’s electrical parts and engine need to be kept in a waterproof area.

How can a person keep the engine and electric parts from getting shorted out? It can be done by positioning the engine in the boat’s hull with the propeller coming out from under the water into a water tight seal.

It would not be a bad thinking to acquire a kit with a pre-made boat. This can save time and money from trying to create your own, which could cause waterlogged or even ruined engines.

3. Remote Control Planes –

Remote control planes cause the most problems for people but more so for beginners. Why? Planes need accurate measurements and calculations to keep in the air.

It is easy to procure a kit to make a plane. In the kit there will be pieces that will need to be cut out and all you will have to do is bond them together. After that, you can add the radio and motor equipment. Should you be of the audacious type, you can purchase wood of lightweight origin and make a plane done from scratch using the wood and other plane parts.

4. Remote Control Helicopters –

Helicopters, like planes, are not the only thing that can be flown in the air. Like a plane, the costs is relatively the same. Although a helicopter is able to go backwards, forwards and hover mid-air unlike a plane.

With four different types of remote control vehicles to choose from, all that is stopping you from enjoying this technological hobby is you.

Go Off Road With A Remote Control Truck

Many people have some kind of hobby that they dedicate their life to.  Some choose to collect sports cards and others choose to collect comic books.  Some people collect trinkets that only just sit there for people to look at, others might collect dolls.  Since the 1960’s, toy and car enthusiasts have flocked to a hobby that combines both their passions.  That hobby is RC vehicles (remote control trucks, boats, cars, airplanes, and helicopters.)  The good thing about collecting these models is that you can put them in a display and set it on the mantle for all to see and admire, or you can actually take them outside and play with them.

One of the many different vehicle types you can purchase in model form, are remote control trucks.  In the past, the most popular style of RC truck you would see was a stadium style truck.  Now the most popular toy truck people buy is modeled after monster trucks.  The older stadium trucks were ideal for flat and smooth dirt surface tracks, while the monster trucks you see today are fitted for a more rugged terrain, much like the differences between the real life versions.  The monster truck variety of model vehicles even features the giant oversized tires found on the real thing.

The early kinds of remote control trucks were not nearly as refined as the models you see today.  They were pretty much the same base as a remote control car, just with a truck body.  If you tried to drive one of the older models through any kind of terrain that was the slightest bit rougher than grass or pavement, the truck could not handle it.  Also, with the older models, you would buy a kit and have to pretty much put together the whole truck.  Luckily, most of the models come already put together.  You may have to put together a big piece or two, but most of the work is done for you.

The remote control trucks of today have advanced quite a bit from the older models, as small as they may be in size, today’s models pack a ton of technology inside.  They now feature suspension, detailed engines, life like steering, and other electronics.  It may even be difficult for someone not familiar with RC vehicles to mistake a photo of a model for the real thing.

Introduction to Gas Powered Remote Control Vehicles

Are you new to the RC racing world? Read this article to get yourself started in this fast paced hobby.

There are many ways on how to start with gas-powered RC car or truck. There are many realistic features offered by these remote-controlled cars and trucks. They come in a variety of styles and types in the industry. In choosing one, there are many considerations you should take before eventually owning one.

Radio-controlled cars and trucks lack the power and running time. But if you want to consider, you can convert them into gas powered RC cars, with the use of nitromethane-based fuel. This fuel provides RC cars a level or realism or performance, which are absent on other battery-powered vehicles. Aside from this, they are also highly customizable making it possible for you to integrate RC car accessories and personalize them. There are options of engines and transmitters available to allow you to choose one depending on how you’d want the RC car works.

To help you begin in finding the right gas-powered RC car, the following are the factors you should consider:

1.    Engines. The most important aspect in a gas RC car, you can choose from the variety of engine models available to choose from. Generally, most RC cars use a specific type, which is commonly called as “glow” engine. It is a 2-cycle combustion engine, which creates power to the RC car preparing it for realism that also produces exhaust in the process. In replacement of spark plugs utilized by automotive engines, a “glow plug” is used for this engine. It is being heated in turn by a “glow starter.” The heat will be held by the “glow plug” to which this is now used to fire engine strokes for rest of the running power.

2.    Fuel. Just like the actual gasoline used in automobiles, the nitromethane-based gas fuel the RC cars. The fuel mixture is formulated with special lubricants so that it protects the engine from the excessive heat produced by the combustion process. The lubricants are the same with the gas-oil you use with your small engine equipments or some chainsaws. Accessories such as a special bottle pump may be needed to get nitro-fuel into your fuel tank of the RC car. Filters are also used on these cars and the same with your automobile they require replacement at a proper time interval.

3.    Radio. Radio controller is used to control the RC car and could be same type used on electrically-powered RC cars. It is radio controller operates on 2-channel system that needs batteries to make it work. Additional batteries would be needed to power the receiver though there are other receivers that are fed from the motor itself.

4.    Sport or competition. This is an aspect you most considered when choosing body style. There are different options for you; you have choices from sedans, trucks, buggies, stock cars, and other popular car models. These are basically available in two versions: sports, and competition version. Sports RC cars typically cost less than the car you intend to race, which of course would need more power and higher speeds. Ball bearings and oil shocks are some of the advanced options included for the competition RC car version.

Depending on the type you need, RC car kits and ready-to-car or RTR kits are available. If you are a beginner, RTR kits are what you need as this comes out of the box ready for the fuel. RC car kit, on the other hand, requires heavy work but allows you to decide how they would be put together.
